Record Store Day Returns April 20
This year, 4-20 is more than a day to feel high -- it's about buying records!
Get ready to hit the decks, or at least your local indie record store, because Record Store Day is back on Saturday, April 20, 2024. It's a global celebration of all things vinyl (and some CDs), and it’s a super fun day to browse limited edition records and special releases, meet fellow music lovers, and maybe even snag some rare finds. Yes, picture discs, too.
Record Store Day was started in 2008 by a group of indie record store owners who wanted to show some love to these special music spots. It's grown into a worldwide phenomenon and every year; stores put on a party for vinyl enthusiasts and record collectors alike. This year, I’m on the lookout for these incredible titles:
Bill Evans, Everyone Digs Bill Evans — This special release is a must-have for fans of the legendary pianist.
Horace Andy with Sly & Robbie, Living It Up: Get ready for dub and traditional reggae with this killer collab between vocalist Horace Andy and the rhythm masters Sly & Robbie.
Ernest Tubb & His Texas Troubadours, World Broadcast Recordings 1944-45. Time travel back to the forties with this record featuring historical recordings from country music legend Ernest Tubb.
Jazz Dispensary: The Freedom Sound! The People Arise — This limited edition compilation features jazz that served as a soundtrack to the civil rights movement.
But wait, there's more! While your list may have it all, Record Store Day is about digging deep for hidden gems. Here are three more titles from Soul Jazz Records to spark your vinyl hunt.
Soul Jazz Presents Studio One Rude Boy: This one's for the reggae fans. It explores the legendary Jamaican record label Studio One and the raw energy of early reggae.
Soul Jazz Presents PUNK 45: Kill The Hippies! Kill Yourself!: Dive into the underground American punk scene of the late 70s and early 80s.
Soul Jazz Presents 300% DYNAMITE!: This compilation brings the vibrant sounds of Jamaican music to life, featuring a mix of ska, soul, rocksteady, funk, and dub.
What titles are you most excited about? Here’s the full list.
Since Record Store Day releases are limited, it's a good idea to call your local record store to see what they have in stock and if they're hosting any special events. So, grab your friends and plan to get up early on April 20th to visit your favorite record store. Get ready to celebrate the love of music on Record Store Day.
But first, coffee, then #RSD24. 🤓
