As we head towards spring, the show took a more synthesized direction this week, as it was mostly an electronic playlist, full of headphone music, drum and bass, and ambient sounds. It all came together after reading a brief article about Pan American, a late 90s electronic experimental project by Mark Nelson, vocalist and guitarist for the band Labradford. The entire playlist came together from there—sneaking in some wild drum n bass but then a calmness takes over. We began the program with early 2000s retro trip hop. Click the button below to listen.
PLAYLIST
TIM LOVE LEE with Ti Ti Tango from his B-side collection titled, “Confessions of the 36th Best Trip Hop Producer of All Time” on Tummy Touch Records.
SP:MC with a new single titled, Missing You. West London drum and bass courtesy of Declassified Records.
PHOTEK with Phaze 1 (Any Odysee Remix) from a new compilation called ODYR005 Phase 1 Remixes & Remaster on Odysee Recordings from the UK.
NYC’s DJ SWISHA with KUSH JONES released a single called Respectfully. It’s one of 4 new tracks released last month by DJ Swisha himself.
Carmen Villain with A Year Ago from a new two-song release called CV x Actress. Villain is a Norwegian-Mexican artist and producer making atmospheric music that includes field-recordings, synths, woodwinds, samples and more… This track is cosmic with a splash of dub painted on the walls. Courtesy of Smalltown Supersound.
Anja Lauvdal with The Dreamer from the LP A Story Now Lost. She’s another Norwegian artist who has performed with Jenny Hval, Lasse Marhaug, among others. It’s another release from Smalltown Supersound.
Hanakiv with No Words Left from Gondwana Records of Manchester, England. They’re an Estonian composer that uses sounds and piano to create ethereal ambient music and here they feature Alabaster DePlume on saxophone.
Pan American with Remapping on Kranky Records. It’s from the very first full-length release from Pan American, which goes back to mid-1998. Very quiet dub-like beats over synth and haunting strings—just a gorgeous release that holds up some 25 years later.
KILN with Dodecatheon from the just re-issued album, Holo on Keplar records. I’ve played KILN before from their Ghostly International days—this is similar, only to me it’s more minimal, more in the vein of headphone music than previous works.
Lake Mary & Nevada Greene (also known as M.Crook & Chaz Prymek) Here they perform beautiful guitar and lap-steel improvisations created to help a family member in dire need of support. We heard part III & IV of Profane Illuminations.
Growing with Tired Tubes Sigh Like Old Men which is the first in a series of across-continent created tracks recorded under the title, Humming Amps and Broken Strings Sing: Silent Melodies to an Empty Field.
Elodie is Andrew Chalk and Timo Van Luijk and here they perform quietude on a brand new record of muted piano, tape loops and ambient strings. It’s well produced quiet music of euphoric landscapes.
We finish this episode with new music from Loscil & Lawrence English. Scott Morgan is a Vancouver-based ambient and electronic music composer also known as Loscil. His newest release, Colours Of Air, was co-created with composer Lawrence English. It’s now available on CD or digital from Kranky Records. It’s a collection of recordings from an antique pipe organ found in Brisbane, Australia and you can read more about it on the nhsoundwaves blog.
Thank you for listening and we’ll be back with a new episode in two weeks. Until then, be well and take care of each other. - JB
